What is Ghostwriting? Is it Ethical?

Ghostwriting is when a person writes documents, whether books, letters, blogs, articles, or otherwise, while another person receives the credit for it. A ghostwriter may be hired to research and write the required documents and manuscripts or just write the text with the given information.

Possibly the most common forms of work that ghostwriters are hired for are to write songs, website content, and memoirs, but the work doesn’t stop there. Virtually any kind of text can be ghostwritten. Entire series of books may be completed with the actual author remaining unknown.

While this practice may seem controversial, it is not immoral. There is typically a contract between the writer and the person obtaining credit, specifically agreeing that the individual creating the works remains unknown. The writer receives payment for their work with that agreement. If the person is writing an essay for which a student was getting graded, that would be considered cheating. However, most work that ghostwriters perform is not those being graded. They are simply documents for either the employer’s gratification or that which the public can enjoy.

So why would someone want to hire a ghostwriter rather than doing the work themselves? There are several possible reasons for this, but here are the top three.

1.  One of the primary reasons is the time it takes to create a well-written document. Many people don’t have the hours or the organization, and this causes unwanted pressure and stress. Often, the work doesn’t get completed because of it.

2.  Another reason is the difficulty of putting their words on paper (or software). They know what they want to say but can’t put it into words as they would like it. Sometimes this can put a damper on progress and motivation, aside from not having the desired results in the finished product.

3.  The lack of desire is another reason. This usually happens with blog posts or articles that need to be completed. The blog owner may not have the desire to do the work, perhaps because they don’t like writing or because they have other work on their to-do list.

These reasons lead to what a ghostwriter could possibly complete. It’s a long list, and ghostwriters may specialize in the categories below or by topics, while some might remain general, taking whatever projects come their way.
