Self-Publishing: Is It For You? Here are Some Details to Help You Out!

It's a big deal to get published by a publishing house. It is also a lot of work. Very few submissions that pass through the editor's hands ever reach print. Before even getting to that point, there is the submission stage, revisions, and more. It can take over two years between the first and last steps to finally see the printed copy. That said, any published author is likely very proud of the accomplishment.

Possibly because of the unlikely chance of being taken on by a publishing house, and the time involved, and, at times, the fees presented, many people have gone with self-publishing. While authors that have been published the traditional way might scorn the idea, as might others, there is nothing to be ashamed of. You want to get your work out there in the public, and self-publishing is a great way to go forward with that.

There are two main methods of self-publishing. One is through creating a PDF document and allowing people to download it, whether for free or for a price. The other is through Amazon Kindle. These two methods have their pros and cons. However, some authors decide to go both routes to get the biggest benefit.

In either case, you need to write your work and have it edited. If you decide to simply sell a PDF file, you can choose to do so through your own website, or sell through forums like Etsy. There are actually numerous websites and platforms that allow you to sell digital files as long as you have the legal right to do so.

In terms of Amazon, you can choose to have the Amazon software convert your PDF or Word file to their own Kindle format. There is also their KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) method where you can copy and paste your data and have it automatically formatted correctly. In either case, you are recommended to completely review the work before it is published. Amazon also gives you a cover creation tool that comes in handy.

There are some major differences between these two self-publishing methods. If you sell your PDF file from various forums, there may be more marketing required. However, you get to keep the profit. Please be sure to note any fees involved with forums like Etsy or that of having your own website. With regard to Amazon, there are millions of customers on the platform each day looking for books, so they already have traffic going by. You may require less marketing effort. Amazon does have its own fees, of course, based on the price of your book. You receive 35% royalties on works that are priced between 0-$2.98 and over $9.99. Books between $2.99 and $9.99 give you 70% royalty. Amazon keeps the rest of the revenue.

Whatever method you choose, or even if you decide to use both, you'll likely receive better results if you complete extra marketing. You can share your links through Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, Linked In, Pinterest, and other social media sites.

Any type of self-publishing requires work unless you outsource all of it. You can hire a ghostwriter, editor, and someone to complete the submission work. You could even hire a marketer for promoting the manuscript. It is your choice. Whatever your decision, you have the chance to get your ideas out to the public and even earn money from it.
