Tutoring Businesses vs. Tutoring Jobs

Being a tutor is incredibly fulfilling whether you are teaching children or adults. However, you may have a choice between creating your own tutoring business or applying for a tutoring job with an already established company.

There are benefits to both of these options. In fact, if you decide to start your own online business, you may decide to have a job on the side while you build your enterprise.

There is a lot of freedom in setting up your own business. You can target a specific market, choose your clients, set your prices, and decide on when you want to work. However, there is a lot of work involved with setting up and actually getting clients. There is also the curriculum and software to choose or create unless you are using what students provide.

Tutoring jobs allow you to work for a company that already has clients. You may still choose your own hours, but there may not be as much flexibility. The pay rates may also already be set. The pay ranges in this industry from approximately $8USD to $25USD per session and more. The rates often depend on the qualifications required and the level at which you are teaching. When you are comparing session rates, be sure to check the amount of time per lesson. Sessions can vary between 15 and 60 minutes. Often, companies provide you with material or have the students provide it. Software tends to be provided by the company.

Reading about the pros and cons of tutoring businesses and jobs, you'd think that the jobs have more pros. It really depends on what you are looking for, your goals, and the amount of drive you have. If you simply want a job with steady pay, then yes, a tutoring position may be most suitable. If you want more adventure, risk, and to some extent, additional control, and perhaps higher pay, the business venture may be your thing.

Remember, you don't have to go for just one. Many entrepreneurs have started with an instructor's job but have decided to move on to create their own venture, and have been very successful with it.
